According to Earth Day’s website, approximately 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth day, or put another way, 10% of the total U.S. population! Other key events that happened in 1970: The Environmental Protection Agency was established and the National Environmental Education Act, Occupational Safety and Health Act, and the Clean Air Act were passed. The Clean Water Act was passed in 1972.
